Peabody Essex Museum

Salem, Massachusetts

The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts, is committed to creating experiences of art, culture, and creative expression that transform people’s lives by broadening their perspectives of themselves and the wider world. PEM is among America’s fastest growing art museums in the past quarter century with 1.8 million works of art and culture, 23 historic properties, and a major research library. PEM serves audiences worldwide and is the only art museum in the world that employs a full-time neuroscientist to help improve the impact and relevance of art experiences and programs. An ArtsAmplified grant of $900,000 will help PEM increase innovation through expanded staff training, support its application of neuroscience and other creative initiatives, and expand its audiences worldwide. The grant will also aid the creation of entirely new installations of all PEM collections as it constructs a new 40,000-square-foot wing and 120,000-square-foot Collection Center.

“We have unprecedented opportunities to make art more central in people’s lives. All we need to do to make this happen is give up some old ideas and practices, and invent new ones.” – Dan L. Monroe, The Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Director and CEO
