Jean Appolon Expressions

Celebrating and advancing Haitian folkloric dance in Greater Boston to spark healing and build community resilience.

Jean Appolon Expressions (JAE) celebrates and advances Haitian folkloric dance by building a contemporary cultural community that produces professional performances, educational opportunities, and training. Based in Cambridge, with programming across Greater Boston, JAE offers free community-based classes to diverse communities with the belief that folkloric dance builds resilience in its community by connecting people’s bodies and their movements to a tradition that crosses seas and generations. Its newest production, “Traka,” uses dance to spark healing from the many traumas that its community – mostly made up of Haitians, immigrants, and other BIPOC people – have suffered, both historically and presently, including the social isolation and harm caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and white supremacy.
