What Do We Want All of Our High School Graduates to Know and Be Able to Do?

Barr announces RFP for New England communities to build a “portrait of a graduate” – a collective vision of high school graduates who are prepared for post-secondary success.

The Barr Foundation’s Education Program believes in the potential of all students. When they graduate high school, all students should be equipped to succeed in college, career, and community. Making this a reality for all students takes robust community engagement and intentional planning. That’s where a “portrait of a graduate” can help.

A portrait of a graduate articulates a community’s collective vision of what its high school students will know and be able to do upon graduation. It embraces a comprehensive view that combines content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and habits that set students up for success.

To significantly improve outcomes for students and graduates takes policy change and new practice. This requires community buy-in. Building a portrait of a graduate brings students, families, school staff members, and committed partners from higher education, local employers, and others to the planning table. The diverse insights of community members are vital to developing a collective set of expectations for all high school graduates.

We look forward to reviewing proposals and to discovering new partners committed to the success of all students in their community and ready to embark on this journey.
