Class of 2011 Barr Fellow Madeleine Steczynski wins National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

In 1991, Madeleine Steczynski, a Class of 2001 Barr Fellow, started giving music lessons in her East Boston apartment. In 2011, Steczynski's nonprofit, ZUMIX, is serving over 400 kids, and it had been a finalist three times for the highest honor our country has for youth arts programs.

On November 2 Class of 2011 Barr Fellow Madeleine Steczynski Executive Director of ZUMIX traveled to Washington DC with 15-year-old Ixchel Garcia a seven-year ZUMIX veteran. For the third time ZUMIX had been selected as one of the finalists for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award which is the highest honor our country has for youth arts programs. This year it was one of 50 finalists from among 471 nominees. And this year they won.
