Announcing Barr’s First President

With great excitement, we announce that Jim Canales will join the Barr Foundation as president in May 2014.

As president, Jim will also serve on Barr’s Board of Trustees. He is currently the president and CEO of The James Irvine Foundation in California, where he has served for 20 years, including 11 as president. Under Jim’s leadership, Irvine has enjoyed a reputation as a well-managed, transparent, and effective foundation that is focused on results. Irvine has also played a leading role supporting and building diverse leadership in California’s public and nonprofit sectors.

“Amos and I are so pleased to welcome Jim as Barr’s first president and look forward to introducing him to our community,” said Barbara Hostetter, chair of Barr’s Board of Trustees. “The integrity and values that Jim brings to his work set an inspired standard of excellence. His humility reminds us all that the purpose of our work is to be in service to others.”

Barr’s press release announcing Jim’s appointment is below, and you can read Jim’s bio here. Both provide more information on him and the fresh perspective he will bring to Barr as he leads a strategic planning process for the future growth of the Foundation—growth that will sustain our current work in Boston and extend our reach on the issues to which we are committed.

Thank you for helping share this exciting news with your networks. Please join me, Barr’s trustees, and Barr staff in welcoming Jim to Boston.
