    (Former) President & CEO, Mass Mentoring Partnership

    At the time he was recognized as a Barr Fellow, David Shapiro had served for six years as President & CEO of Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP), an umbrella organization for youth mentoring in Massachusetts. MMP works across sectors to increase the quantity and quality of youth mentoring opportunities for the Commonwealth's young people. MMP drives, leverages, and maximizes investments in the field, operates impactful mentor recruitment and public awareness campaigns, and provides innovative training and consulting services. MMP has a statewide network of 170 mentoring programs that serve almost 20,000 young people contributing to powerful outcomes in youth violence prevention, dropout prevention and conversely academic achievement and workforce development. MMP seeks to double the number of young people in quality structured mentoring relationships by 2013. In addition to the launch of a Western MA office, in Shapiro's tenure, MMP implemented high-leverage initiatives including: Champions of Mentoring at Fenway Park, Highland Street AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring, Red Sox Mentoring Challenge, Quality-Based Membership, and Mass Mentoring Counts.

    Previously, Mr. Shapiro was Co-Director of the United States Golf Association Foundation, implementing its 10-year, $50 million commitment to use golf to improve the lives of economically disadvantaged youth and people with disabilities. He also worked for the Red Cross as Director of Institutional Advancement for the Massachusetts Bay chapter, the sixth largest chapter in the country at the time.

    A native of Baltimore, Mr. Shapiro attended Amherst College, where he double-majored in English and political science. He was also a Tri-Captain on the football team and a GTE Division III Academic All-American. He has been awarded the Manza Excellence in Leadership Award by the National Mentoring Partnership and was selected for the Boston Business Journal's 40 Under 40. Mr. Shapiro is on the boards of Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, Common Impact, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and Friends of the Children - Boston. He lives in Jamaica Plain with his wife Kristin and two boys, Brennan and Jack.
